The making of the harpsichord as it was taught to apprentices in Italy, Flanders, France, England and Germany. From 1500 to 1800. A chapter is devoted to each of the five most important schools. Over 40 plates; each set of drawings includes a plan drawn to scale, the interior of the instrument and details of action and construction. Supplemented by reproductions of illustrations from early sources. Appendixes contain texts of revelant documents, including inventories of the shops of some prominent French makers.
